NOMS restorative justice capacity building programme evaluation published

An evaluation of the National Offender Management Service (NOMS) restorative justice capacity building programme has been published. The 27 month programme, delivered by Restorative Solutions, aimed to increase provision of restorative justice within the prison and probation service through a large training programme for staff.

The RJC launches publication to support new probation landscape

The RJC has launched the fourth in a series of information packs to help increase the use of restorative justice within the criminal justice system.  The new pack gives information on delivering restorative justice in the new probation landscape, and is now available alongside similar packs for magistrates, youth offending teams, and the police.

Baroness Young OBE supports the RJC's Restorative justice and disproportionality event

Last week, the RJC held an event in partnership with the Black Training and Enterprise Group (BTEG), to explore how restorative justice could combat disproportionality in the criminal justice system.  

The event was in response to The Young Review, which outlines the disproportionately negative outcomes for offenders from the Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community, and marked the beginning of collaborative work between BTEG and the RJC on restorative justice and disproportionality.

Victims' Commissioner endorses the RSQM

Baroness Newlove, the Victims' Commissioner, has spoken positively about restorative justice and endorsed the RJC's Restorative Service Quality Mark. This film, recorded for a recent Ministry of Justice conference for police and crime commissioners, follows a report on restorative justice published by Baroness Newlove in November last year.

Restorative justice on BBC One - The Gift

On March 3, the BBC One series The Gift featured a restorative justice conference in which an ex-offender met one of the victims of a series of armed robberies he had been involved in.

Following some concerns expressed about this programme, the RJC is pleased to have been invited to take part in a review of this episode of The Gift with the programme makers and those involved in the case that was featured. This will be an opportunity to discuss the coverage of restorative justice cases in the media in the future.

Members of Experts in restorative justice group announced

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has announced the members of its new Experts in Restorative Justice Group. The Group will inform the government’s policies and activities in relation to restorative justice in England and Wales.

In November 2014, the MoJ invited applications from stakeholders interested in being members of the Experts in Restorative Justice Group. A total of 45 expressions of interest were received before being narrowed down to a group of 18:
