Restorative Approaches in Primary Schools: An Evaluation of the Project Co-ordinated by the Barnet Youth Offending Service

An evaluation of restorative approaches in Barnet found that schools that had received training in restorative approaches had reduced their numbers of fixed-term exclusions by half. In contrast schools who had not received restorative training had exclusions increase by over two-thirds. The training, delivered by Transforming Conflict, also reduced bullying within the school whilst increasing calmness and safety. The evaluation revealed increased confidence and ability from staff. The pupils themselves were more likely to take responsibility for their actions and behaviour and deal with problems themselves.
