Resolution #43 Winter 2011/12

Featured on the cover of this issue, David Rogers tells the heartbreaking yet inspiring story of how and why he chose to meet the boy who killed his son Adam (page 12). Also, for the first time in Resolution we hear from Henry, a young offender, about how meeting the mother of his victim gave him the motivation to give up drugs (page 18). Their experiences –

highlighting the potential benefits of restorative practice for everyone involved – depend on the work of the highly skilled and dedicated practitioners who facilitated their
meetings.

The range and quality of contributions to this issue of Resolution also reflect the depth and quality of restorative
practice and thought, across the country and across a wide range of agencies:
  • Mick Levens and Andy Williams talk about the key impact of restorative practice in transforming their schools, Forest Hill School in Lewisham in South London, and Monmouth Comprehensive, while the first in our series of extracts from Belinda Hopkins’ book The Restorative Classroom shows how thinking on restorative practice in schools has moved towards a new restorative and relational pedagogy (pages 6 to 9).
  • We hear from Sarah Cairns, a volunteer facilitator in Gloucester Prison and a registered Accredited Practitioner with the RJC, about why she wanted a professional accreditation of her restorative work. RJC’s Linda Millington answers some ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ about becoming an Accredited Practitioner registered with the RJC (pages 10 and 11).
  • We include the third in our series of extracts from Professor Joanna Shapland’s research, this time focussing on the importance of outcome agreements in the restorative process (page 16).
  • Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan’s article (page 4) writes about the potential of restorative justice to grow social capital in our communities
  • Extracts from the National Prisons Week Lecture 'Considering Restorative Justice' by Parliamentary Under-secretary of State for Justice Crispin Blunt MP, with Comments from Bishop for Prisons Peter Selby.
  • We have an update on restorative justice in New Zealand and the work of Restorative Justice Aotearoa
  • Alexander Ankrah tells us about the work of the Tutu Foundation UK and their new project using restorative approaches to tackle inequality in the NHS.
