Aims, Vision and Constitution
Our vision is that every person harmed by crime or conflict should have the opportunity to resolve it through a restorative process.
The RJC is the independent third sector membership body for restorative practice. All members elect the Board of Trustees. Trustees serve a maximum of three, three year terms and must stand in a competitive election (held at the RJC's Annual General Meeting) at the end of each term. The board is made of seven members elected directly from the membership and five co-opted by the board for their skills and experience (such as accounting, marketing or background in quality assurance).
The RJC was founded in 1997 as the Restorative Justice Consortium, and awarded charitable status in June 2003. In 2010 we became the Restorative Justice Council, in recognition of our track record and role as the quality assurance body for the field.
Our charitable aims are:
" To promote restorative justice for the public benefit as a means of resolving conflict and promoting reconciliation by:
(i) Promoting the use of restorative justice in the criminal justice system, in schools, in the workplace and elsewhere in the community in situations where conflict may arise;
(ii) Developing and promoting agreed standards and principles for evaluating and guiding restorative practice;
(iii) Advancing education and research on restorative justice and the publication of the useful results of that research."
As proposed in our consultation document on Practitioner Registration, published in January 2011 (and welcomed by the great majority of respondents), the RJC adopted new Articles of Association at a General Meeting of the membership on 13 July 2011.
