Project Salus - Skills Based Training in Restorative Approaches

Project Salus, in partnership with Salus Solutions, will be running a 3 day training course in Restorative Approaches,  26th, 27th and 28th March 2012. This training is highly regarded by schools who are seeking an alternative, more restorative behaviour management system.

What sets this training course apart from other restorative approaches training is that it covers a complete range of restorative interventions, rather than simply focussing on restorative justice conferencing. The course was developed and written in response to the restorative justice schools pilot that ran in Kent from 2008-2011. Feedback from schools was that a ‘whole school’ approach to building and maintaining relationships was needed, rather than just a strategy for repair, when things had gone wrong.

“Restorative Justice Conferencing certainly has its place in our school for dealing with the more formal issues, but it’s the day to day informal interactions that are so important for developing a healthy and successful environment. We needed restorative interventions in the classroom, in the corridor, on the playground, as well as in the staff room and not just when things had gone wrong.”
(Head of School, West Kent Secondary School)

The course gives delegates an overview of the principles of restorative justice and looks at how embedding these principles into a school setting has huge benefits for the whole school, not just in terms of behaviour management but also for the emotional health and well-being of both staff and pupils. Some of the benefits that a school may experience from implementing a restorative approach are;

  • Reduction in exclusions
  • Reduction in incidents of anti-social behaviour
  • Increased attendance
  • Reduced staff turnover and stress
  • A more positive learning environment

This course is designed to provide delegates with a range of restorative skills, including mediation skills, restorative language, classroom circles, de-escalation strategies and active listening skills. The course also explores the issue of culture change and implementation.

This interactive course is facilitated by Heather Skelton and Andrew Milne, two very experienced restorative practitioners. Heather is one of the first practitioners in this field to be listed on the national register of restorative practitioners, through the Restorative Justice Council.

Course content includes:

  • History, philosophy and principles of restorative justice
  • Key benefits to schools
  • Retributive versus restorative behaviour management
  • Key skills in dealing with conflict
  • Identifying appropriate restorative responses
  • Restorative language
  • The role of mediation
