An Introduction to Restorative Approaches for People working in Educational and other Youth Settings

February 27th – March 2nd 2012 near Reading, West Berkshire, UK

An opportunity to work with the highly regarded Transforming Conflict model of restorative practice developed by restorative approaches pioneer and author, Belinda Hopkins who will be the course tutor. Participants can expect to improve their ability to manage interpersonal conflict and challenging behaviour. They will learn more about how to cope with, and help, angry and upset people and learn more about their own reactions and responses in such situations. They will learn how to mediate conflicts between others, how to facilitate community- building and problem-solving circles and how to facilitate restorative conferences involving stakeholders from different backgrounds to help all involved address and repair harm that has been caused. Finally they will reflect on how they can take their new skills and apply them in their own settings.

This course has often been described as life – changing. It is also fun however – so come prepared to laugh a lot. This course will cover all aspects of the National Occupational Standards, either experientially or through background reading, and participants will be guided in how to develop their skills further and eventually qualify for Registered Practitioner status.

Trainers and experienced practitioners also very welcome. The TC model is a synthesis of the best of conflict resolution, mediation and restorative conferencing. It is not based on the original Thames Valley Police scripted model although this has influenced its development. As such many experienced practitioners have attended the course to deepen their understanding of the micro-skills that underpin the scripted approach. For experienced practitioners keen to keep up their own personal development this would be a fantastic opportunity.
