IrelandNational Commission for Restorative Justice final report (2009) National Commission on Restorative Justice, established in March 2007 to consider the application of restorative justice and to make recommendations as to its potential wider application in Ireland published its final report December 2009. An international review of the research evidence found strong evidence of restorative justice meeting victim needs, bringing offenders to accept responsibility for the harm done to victims and helping avoid reoffending in the future. It also finds restorative justice to be among the less expensive options available to the criminal justice system. The commission recommend a legislative base to provide safeguards, protect core values and address sensitive issues. The Commission strongly recommends that the wider application of restorative justice be given a statutory basis.
